  • Australian National Herbarium (CANB) (GBRDS)
  • The total Australian National Herbarium (ANH) collection (Canberra [CANB] and Atherton [QRS]) comprises approximately 1.4 million specimens, including about 8251 type specimens. Particularly comprehensive collections are held for Australasian bryophytes and lichens, Myrtaceae (especially Eucalyptus and Melaleuca-Callistemon), Orchidaceae, Sapindaceae, Lauraceae, Portulacaceae and some sections of Poaceae, Rutaceae, Proteaceae and Fabaceae. A strong representation of Papua New Guinean material derives from past CSIRO involvement in that area and a comprehensive specialist collection of tropical Australian rain forest species is held at Atherton (>100 000 collections). Voucher material for the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) Living Collections and the ANBG Photographic Collection is clearly identified and accessible; the status of associated live material at ANBG, representing c. one third of the Australian vascular flora, is available on-line (http://www.anbg.gov.au/anbg/plant-records/search-lc-vic.html). The existence of properly vouchered herbarium specimens for ANBG's live plants is critical for the scientific integrity and ongoing usefulness of scientific studies using those plants (e.g. for DNA extracts).

  • Christopher Walker collection of Glomeromycotan fungi (GBRDS)
  • The collection of fungi, mainly members of the Glomeromycota, consists of voucher specimens and records relating to some three decades of research into the taxonomy and systematics of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi . Most of the specimens are held in the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (E), though more recent ones may still be retained personally by Chris Walker pending their deposit in the herbarium. The vouchers mainly consist of spores mounted in polyvinyl-alcohol lactophenol (PVL) or polyvinyl-alcohol lacto glycerol (PVLG), with or without the addition of reagents (principally Melzer's reagent) and dyes (e.g., trypan blue, ink). The organisms have been collected by many different people too numerous to mention, and their contributionis acknowledged with thanks. Some are of importance because they are type specimens, and some are voucher records for published work. Some records of types are virtual, being merely pointers to the specimens held in other herbaria.

  • Harpactus Shuckard (GBRDS)
  • The database lists 448 specimens belonging to 16 species of genus Harpactus Shuckard, 1837 having their depository at the entomological collections of the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum in Leiden (The Netherlands) and the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales in Madrid (Spain). Harpactus, predominantly Holarctic genus with 73 recently valid species displays both great diversity and abundance in arid regions and includes many “problem“ species which are ill defined as a separate species and/or have never been recognized after appearing of their first descriptions. Those circumstances bring the attention the researchers to put whole members of the genus under revision. Such as revision, formally started in 2005 with the exploration over the Harpactus materials in the Zoologisches Museum an der Humboldt-Universitat in Berlin (Germany) already results in some particular outputs one of which is the present database. Included species in the data base are these which are morphologically recognized as a valid species without any doubt.

  • Hatikka Observation Data Gateway (GBRDS)
  • Hatikka is a live data collection gateway where individual nature observers can keep their own field journals. The contents are world-wide, but majority is from Finland and Estonia. It covers all groups of organisms. Several scientific associations and projects of the Finnish Museum of Natural History, such as the Bird Atlas, coordinate the data entry that concerns their particular groups. However, only rudimentary a-priori checking of data is done, so this data should be used with caution. Some data has been generalised as described in each record. Currently only about 1/3 of existing data has been released.

  • Royal Museum of Central Africa - True Fruit Flies (Diptera, Tephritidae) of the Afrotropical Region (ENBI wp13) (GBRDS)
  • Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are one of the most economically important groups of insects in the Afrotropical Region. They cause millions of Euros of damage to fruits and vegetables, and are a major constraint to commercial and subsistence farming in the region. The family Tephritidae includes more than 5000 species worldwide, approximately 1400 species of which develop in fleshy fruits (Norrbom et al 1999). Nearly 250 of these species are capable of achieving pest status by feeding on plants of economic importance (White and Elson-Harris 1992). The Mediterranean fruit fly, or Medfly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), is currently the most important of these pests from an invasive species perspective. Of African origin, it has spread to several other continents where it causes millions of Euros in damage. It also threatens other horticultural areas (such as California and Florida in the USA and regions in eastern Australia) resulting in very expensive detecting and monitoring programmes in these regions. The destructive association of several species with commercially grown fruit and vegetable crops makes them the subject of intensive agricultural research. But fruit flies are also biologically diverse and form a significant part of the biota of any region. Besides the several pest species, the large majority of the true fruit flies are limited to a small number of indigenous host fruits, mainly from trees and shrubs. Most of them are associated with forested areas, and can be used as indicator species for the biodiversity of a given area. In addition, several fruit fly larvae develop in other parts of host plants such as the stems or flowerheads. Fruit flies database is part of the ENBI WP13 feasibility study (Collaborative project between the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, the Royal Museum for Central Africa and the National Botanical Garden. The data portal for the ENBI WP13 study can be found at http://projects.bebif.be/enbi

  • Slovenian Fungal Database - Boletus informaticus (GBRDS)
  • This resource contains records from Slovenian Fungal Database - Boletus informaticus on 31th March 2008. The resource represents the collected data on the species and distribution of fungi in Slovenia from the archives of the Mycological Association of Slovenia and the personal archives of its members, as well as, in part, from existing collections and literature sources. A computer program for inputting data on fungi in Slovenia is called Boletus informaticus. The program is aimed at systematically recording species of fungi, their distribution, and data regarding their habitat, in addition the program allows various ways processing materials, various means of data retrieval, and cartographical presentations of finds. When the related monograph (DuÅ¡an Jurc, Andrej Piltaver, Nikica Ogris. 2005. Fungi of Slovenia: species and distribution. Studia forestalia Slovenica, 124, Ljubljana, Slovenian Forestry Institute: 497 p.) was published in 2005, there were 114,620 records that describe distribution of 2,452 species of fungi in Slovenia. On 31th March 2008 the BI database had 160,757 records. These records give distribution to 2763 fungi species. All mentioned records are published here.

  • Small Mammal Research Database (GBRDS)
  • This is a part of a research database of Dept. of Ecology, containing results of a study of ecology of small mammals. The material has been collected in the western-central part of Poland close to the of village Turew. The area is mainly of agricultural character, where woodlots are sorrouned by extensive crop fields. The study area involved six woodlots of diferent size (from 1,5 ha to 9,5 ha) and isolation, varying in distance to neighboring forest patches from 5 m to approximately 900 m. To estimate the effects of spatial distibution and variability habitat patches in a landscape on population dynamics of small rodents the CMR (catch-mark-release) method was used. Thirteen trapping sessions, five day each, have been made during three years (1995 to 1997) of studies. References: Kozakiewicz M., Gortat T., Kozakiewicz A., Barkowska M. 1999. • The Korean Freshwater Fishes (GBRDS)
  • The Korean peninsula has about 961 freshwater fishes consisting of 41 orders and 203 families, of which 212 species are freshwater species (Kim and Park, 2002). Recently, for conservation of wild species in the world, there was such treaties as Convention and International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and Convention on Biological Diversiry (CBD). However, our aquatic environments have been exposed to various water pollutions as well as exploitations, and species of Korean freshwater fishes are gradually disappearing or reducing. Fortunately, 15 freshwater fishes are classified to protected or endangered fishes by Ministry of Environment, and they are protected by the law. However, because information on Korean freshwater fishes are limited to some scientists or professional literatures, students and amateurs is difficult to access. Therefore, it may be required a system that can be more useful for amateur and specialist, or students who wants to get a information on Korean freshwater fish. To satisfy the above purposes, we constructed database on 212 Korean freshwater fishes in Korean and English by internet (http://kffish.chonbuk.ac.kr) for providing much information on their description, distribution, ecology, respectively. This DB was divided into four groups: the endemic, endangered or protected, exotic and general species. Also, for more convenient search, it was primarily used many key words by a scientific name, the family name and the common name, even by photographs. It was given the searches by the collected areas, or streams and rivers. Also, this DB is focused on the biodiversity of the Korean freshwater fishes which may be faced with serious ecological problems caused by the development and water pollutions.

MGC Herbarium belongs to the University of Málaga, and is conducted by the Vegetal Biology Department (Botany Area). It is placed on the ground floor in the Science Faculty, with an extension of around 50 m2. The plants are covered by a double sheet and put in pasteboard boxes, which are, at the same time, included into compact lockers. All the material is periodically frozen and fumigated. The Herbarium has nearly 80.000 sheets, 95% identified at specie level, and all of them with a label and a registration number with the letters MGC. Cormophyta groups (Angyospermae, Gymnospermae and Pteridophyta) are the most represented, although there are also Algae, Bryophyta and Lichen. The majority of the plants in the Herbarium have their origin in territories of Andalusia, but it contains many plants from the rest of Spain and Northern Morocco too. It is an essential Herbarium for the projects Flora Iberica, Flora de Andalucía y norte de África, and Flora de Andalucía Oriental, so the greater part of the material has been confirmed or identified by the researchers of these projects. Nowadays, it is being computerized using GBIF Project HERBAR program.

  • The collection Herpetology consists of more than 15000 registered specimens: 9500 reptilia (1750 species), 5500 amphibia (880 species). Because most specimens are not individually labeled, the total number in the collection is probably much higher: at least 50,000 specimens. Included are 353 type specimens: 1 cotype, 45 holotypes, 1 neotype, 26 lectotypes, 63 syntypes, 64 paralectotypes, 151 paratypes, 63 syntypes, 2 topotypes. Most of the material has been collected in Indonesia and Suriname. There is a large collection of Chameleons (Hillenius, 1959), Anura from Madagascar (Blommers Schlösser, 1980; Vences, 2005); The European herpetofauna is also well represented, with a focus on the Dutch herpetofauna (A. Zuiderwijk) and European newts (J.W. Arntzen). The herpetologist, the late Dick Hillenius, was the first curator of this collection and between 2002-2005 Miguel Vences curated the herpetology collection. Vences increased the number of specimens from Madagascar and described numerous new species based on ZMA material.

  • Diptera: types (non-De Meijere) ZMAN contains important type material of Diptera, mainly originating from the Oriental and Australasian regions. Basically the types in the Diptera collection can be divided into those of species described by J. C. H. de Meijere and those that were described by other authors. The approximately 1.200 De Meijere species with circa 4.000 type specimens have been inventoried and their data have been digitised and made publicly available. The non-De Meijere types count approximately 5200 specimens (of which 60 non-types). Types constitute the unique building blocks in taxonomy and knowledge of this material is essential for an adequate reconstruction of the Tree of Life.

  • Zoological Museum Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam (NL) - Pisces_Types (GBRDS)
  • The fish collection of the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam accommodates a broad collection of specimens, both fresh and marine. Collection dates of the material go back to 1850. The collection contains approximately 40.000 items and probably more than 500.000 specimens, mainly preserved in alcohol. About 900 types are present. Almost all recent orders are represented, with taxonomical strengths in the Cypriniformes, Characiformes, Siluriformes, Cyprinodontiformes, Perciformes, and Tetraodontiformes. Biogeographical focus is on the Indo-Australian Archipelago (marine and fresh), and on brackish and freshwater species of South America and the Caribbean. Part of the collection lacks exact geographical data, but the biggest part is provided with quite detailed information on finding locations. Western European fishes have mainly been selected for their reference value. Nowadays roughly 40% of the collection is digitized. The most important contributions to the collection have been made by: * The Siboga Expedition (1899-1900); M. Weber et al. * Biogeography of the Indonesian Archipelago; L.F. de Beaufort * Biogeography of South American catfishes; H. Nijssen, I.
